LOCHS CALEDONIAN CANAL The Caledonian Canal is the stretch of water that connects the East Coast of Scotland (at the Moray Firth), to the West Coast. It is just over 60 miles long and encompasses 28 locks. Although planned initially as a commercial route to enable boats to avoid using the dangerous North coast route, bad planning and not enough funding meant that it was never a real success in terms of profits.
Travelling the Caledonian Canal is the perfect way to explore the
Great Glen, and boats can be chartered from Easter to October. Even
novices can do this, as full instruction is given when hiring the
boat. All along the canal there are anchorages and pontoons, with
pubs, restaurants etc. The voyage will usually take 2-3 days, but
you can take as long as you want.
