DUNVEGAN
CASTLE
This
castle has been the home of the clan Macleod for over 700 years
(longer than any family castle in Scotland) and was built on a crag
overlooking the Atlantic Ocean on the N-W coast of Skye. The castle
is home to the legendary Faery Flag of Dunvegan, given to an early
chief by his wife. Legend has it that it gives victory to the clan
when unfurled, a myth backed up by the victories in the battles
of Glendale (1490) and Trumpan in 1580 (after many Macleods were
famously massacred by the MacDonalds in the church. Don't let this
put you off staying in the MacDonald's charming hotel, Kinloch
Lodge. The flag is also meant to bless the Macleod marriages
as well as charming the herrings in the loch.
